‘'MANUSHI’ Short Stay Home for Women in Distress
Mogappair West, Chennai- 37.
Started in the year 2000, this home is meant for girls and women in the age group 15 to 45 years. Supported by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, this Home accommodates 50 women in distress.
In our country women face many critical problems. They are tortured for dowry, for not bearing male children, for not accommodating the in-laws and so on. They are trafficked they are forced into prostitution and they are thrown out of homes. So far they had no place to go and many chose suicide as the only way out. The Government of India started these Short Stay Homes for Women in Distress to help precisely these women.
Any woman ion distress when she has a safe place to stay, food to eat, dresses to wear and peace, will have a chance to settle down, solve her problems and come up in life. These Short Stay Homes provide the women with all these. The woman in distress can stay in comfort and peace for a specific period of time.
She is given counseling, vocational training and guidance to put her back on the right path. She is helped to come out of the trauma and she gets a chance to start her life again.
The Short Stay Home run by Kalaiselvi Karunalaya was started in the year 2000. It accommodated 50 women and their children. They have separate cots, hygienic linen, nutritious food, entertainment, counseling, vocational training, care for their babies, advocacy, medical check up and treatment and peace and security.

'Poondalir’ for Child Care Centre
Mogappair West
, Chennai- 35.
Kalaiselvi Karunalaya Social Welfare Society runs 4 Day Care Centres for
senior citizens. These centres accommodate 50 elders each. The elders come
to these centres in the morning. They are given lunch. They have news
papers to read, television and other entertainments. They have a chance to
see their friends in the same age group and reminisce with them. Thus,
these day care centres fill a very important gap.
The Government of India selected KKSS as the Best Institution in India in Child Welfare. The Award was conferred on Children’s’ Day in New Delhi on 14 th November 2005.
In Tamil Nadu babies are being abandoned in Government Cradles, hospitals where they are born, by street sides, at door steps, in toilets and so on. Many of the unwed mothers leave the babies at the mercy of this cruel world. A number of babies become orphaned at the time of birth. When the mother dies during childbirth, especially in a very poor family, the father abandons the child. Many parents surrender unwanted children, as they do not have any means to support these babies. While this may seem to be a social evil, it is also evident that the infanticide rate has come down because such abandoned babies find a home, thanks to institutions like KKSS. Foeticide, infanticide and other evils have come down thanks to the Foster care and the chance for adoption for these babies. The babies rendered homeless and parentless reach us through the District Collectors, Social Welfare Officers and socially conscious citizens. In the case of surrendered babies, it is the parents who surrender the babies
.
KKSS receives babies from all over Tamil Nadu. But for agencies like us, these children may be trafficked in or may face worse fates. When we get information about an abandoned baby we travel long distances to recover them so as to give them a home, foster care and a bright future. We take care of the children and arrange for the legal adoption to good parents. KKSS Adoption Centre runs “Poondalir Child Care Centre” in Mogappair, Chennai
The babies are given a thorough Medical Checkup on admission. Most of the babies have been deprived of mother’s milk and were not properly cared for. Thus, they are mostly undernourished and in need of immediate medical care to give them a decent chance at life. They are prematurely born and suffer from congenital ailments. For us a baby is a baby. They are lodged in individual cradles. We have dedicated staff to give motherly care to these children. They are fed, cleaned and cared for
The visiting doctor attends to their normal medical needs. We strictly follow the Immunization Courses advised by the government. The children are given all the doses on schedule. Some private practitioners and some of the hospitals give us special treatment. Notable among them are Sundaram Medical Foundation in Anna Nagar, Chennai and the Children’s Hospital in Egmore for expert treatment and tests. If necessary they are treated as in-patients, while one of our staff stays with the baby. We run Poondalir Centre with the support of kind-hearted people like you. “Anna Nagar Times” gives us good coverage and all the readers give us milk, baby food, napkins or donations. Their benevolence is the prime factor behind our successful handling of these babies. Anna Nagar Ladies Club treats our centre like a mother.
In three years we have admitted 160 babies and 53 babies have found safe homes where they find love affection and are assured of a very bright future, thanks to the efforts of KKSS.
Madras Esplanade Round Table-30 Charitable Trust presented us with a new Maruthi Van, which is of great help to us taking the babies to the hospitals. We also bring babies from places like Salem, Dharmapuri, Cuddalore, Villupram and Vellore in which work too, the van is helpful. Thus the babies need people like you to help them come up normally till they are given in adoption.
Please help us to help these abandoned and destitute babies to have a bright future.
A baby is the most beautiful creation of God
Let’s extend a helping hand in securing their future
